Father Jean shares with us pictures of the people at Mass at the church in his village as well as the 16th anniversary of his ordination.
Father, May God continue to bless His people through your steadfast witness and persevering love! Tu es Sacerdos in Aeternum!
Also included are pictures from the recent Priestly Ordination held in Cameroon. One of the new priests was sponsored by Fr Jean, making it a joyful day for him too!
Father Jean is on his way back to us. Safe travels Fr. Jean!!
Father Chris connected with Father Jean in Cameroon about a week or so ago. Father Jean sent Father Chris some pictures and told him it's extremely hot there - over 130 dergrees !!
Father Jean sent some pictures and wrote “Good morning Father Chris! How are you doing? Here are some pictures from the seminary. You will see seminarians in the chapel, in the soccer game, and in class. You will see me with one of my class." The picture mentioned will be one of the first ones in the gallery of photos.
Father Chris reflected "Seeing some pictures from Cameroon I am starting to appreciate just a little bit more the life our dear Father Jean Sassou came from, and to understand and appreciate his priesthood.
When we are ordained We make certain promises, and the last one is the most dramatic. The ordaining Bishop reaches out and places his hands over your hands, which are in the prayer position, looks you in the eye, and says “do you promise respect and obedience to me in my successors.”
Of course there is only one answer!
There was only one answer when Fr. Jean’s Bishop requested that he come back to Cameroon to teach for several weeks in the seminary.
It is important work! One of the charisms of the diocesan Priest is “to serve the people of a particular place.”
Religious communities might have a particular charism for serving the sick, the poor, the unevagelized, those seeking higher education, and those studying for the priesthood. The bishop of every diocese has to make sure that every thing is in place to recruit and train priests and to serve the faithful in his particular diocese.
Although part of Father Jean‘s priesthood clearly is missionary in nature, serving where there are not enough priests to meet the need, (like here in the USA!) he is first a priest of his diocese, and also has the responsibility to work with the bishop to build up the church in Cameroon."
Fr. Jean is teaching two classes at the Seminary in his native Cameroon. He continues to share with us more pictures of his students and of their classes in session. We joyfully anticipate Fr. Jean’s return to Billerica and hope his students are absorbing all the wisdom Father has to share in the meantime!
You will see pictures of the Seminarians at the dining hall and in Chapel of the Seminary in Cameroon. Father Sassou can be seen in the first pew behind the organ, in the white cassock. This picture is also one of the first ones in the gallery of photos.
