So what do we mean when we say “Hospitality?” Is it all about coffee and donuts? A warm smile and a handshake? Well, yes, and no, and so much more!
engaging in conversations with people so that we can welcome all who enter our doors,
by building relationships with them and accompanying them on their Spiritual Journey.
It says “We are truly glad you are here!”
It means recognizing newcomers in our midst. It means expecting visitors! Anyone who enters our churches for the first time should be recognized and welcomed, and invited to hospitality. Did you know that each weekend 3% of the people who attend Mass are seeking a spiritual home. Imagine if they all chose to attend Mass at our parishes.
It means being welcoming to families with small children. Even when they fuss, and make noise and speak. As mother used to say, “Love my kids, love me. Love me, love my kids.”
It means assisting the elderly … to their seats and then to Communion and then back to their cars.
It means providing services to parishioners at a convenient time. Mass cards, memorial Masses, lists of activities, contact lists. We are on this journey together. How can we help each other?
It does mean coffee and donuts. … but as a way to meet and engage newcomers. … as a way to Evangelize!
