A little bit about our new Patron, St. Matthew the Evangelist

o  The New Testament tells us that Matthew was a disciple of Jesus, who was also a witness of Jesus’ Ascension. (SOURCE)

o  Early Church fathers claimed that Matthew preached the Gospel to the Jewish community in Judea, before traveling to other countries. (SOURCE)

o  St. Matthew, is symbolized by a winged man, or an angel. (SOURCE)

o  In Chapter 9 of his Gospel, Matthew tells the story of Jesus’ call, and the disapproval of the Pharisees. (SOURCE)

o  Matthew wrote his Gospel for Jews who had become followers of Christ. He wanted them to know that Jesus was the Messiah that God had promised to send to save all people. Matthew’s Gospel highlights the ways that Jesus fulfilled the promises of the Hebrew Scripture. (SOURCE)

o  St. Matthew is also the only Evangelist who shares the eight Beatitudes with us. (SOURCE)

o  St. Matthew is the patron saint of accountants and bankers. (SOURCE)
